How many hours a day should you practice the guitar?

If you want to learn the guitar, you need to be aware that this is going to take a lot of work. A LOT of work. This, of course, means that you will need to invest a lot of hours into the whole process.

Because of that, it may help you to figure out a schedule according to which you will practice. To truly master this instrument, you will have to practice on a regular basis, and this will soon become a part of your everyday routine. If you’re really passionate about this instrument, you will incorporate it easily into your life

But how many hours a day should you practise the guitar? That depends. On what? Let’s find out!

Fit it in your schedule

We all have other obligations apart from learning how to play. Whether that’s school, work or our family, other things will pop up and it’s important to plan ahead for them.

Set aside a certain amount of time every day to play but don’t force things. If you can’t play every day, play every other day, or every weekend. Whichever way suits you because it’s important that you focus, be relaxed and perform without any distractions. That’s how you will learn quickly.

It should be noted that it’s recommended you practice as often as possible, and it doesn’t matter if you can’t have sessions that will last hours every day. An hour or two per day (or even per week!) on average could very well turn out to be more than enough for you to develop your skills.

Take regular breaks

When you’re having your practice sessions, a good idea is to take regular breaks every 15 or 20 minutes. This is because, in order to learn in the most efficient way, you need to be fully focused, and it’s been scientifically proven that our focus drops after about 15 minutes. So, it’s best to stop for a few minutes and allow yourself to refocus at that point.

Playing without a break for an hour or even longer is much less effective if you’re trying to learn something new. Simply, you won’t be able to recall the things you did after, let’s say, 40 minutes as clearly as the things you did if you’ve only been playing for 10 minutes.

That is not to say that you shouldn’t practice for longer periods of time in one day. Just take a break every now and again for better results.

And even if you have 10 or 15 minutes of spare time to practice, go for it. Don’t think it’s too little time and that there is no point in practising because of that – this can actually help you achieve some amazing results.

As long as you can practise on a regular basis, you’re heading in the right direction. Then it’s only a matter of keeping up. With time, you will become an excellent guitarist!
